PURPOSE OF TEST
The GEM Premier 5000 analyzer with intelligent Quality Management (iQM) is an advanced, critical care system used by health care professionals to analyze whole blood samples in point of care clinical settings. It provides fast accurate, quantitative measurements of whole blood pH, pCO2, pO2, Na+, K+, ICA++, Glucose, Lactate, Hematocrit, and Co-Oximetry in H34; and pH, pCO2, pO2, and Co-Oximetry in H32, H36, and H38. These parameters, along with the derived parameters, aid in the diagnosis of a patient’s acid/base status, electrolyte and metabolite balance and oxygen delivery capacity.

INITIAL ORIENTATION, TRAINING, COMPETENCY and QUIZ
Initial Orientation & Training – This must be completed once with all new staff trained to use this test for any department.
- Initial Orientation & Training Form – complete once for all new hires.
- GEM 5000 Quick Reference Resource Guide – refer to during training; also next to each GEM analyzer across the hospital.
6 Methods of Competency – This must be completed by all testing personnel 1) After initial training and before technical duties are performed; 2) 6 months after initial training (Semiannually, California Law); and 3) annually thereafter.
Example timeline for a new hire:
* Initial training, competency/quiz: January 1st 2022
* Semiannual competency/quiz, due 6 months later: July 1st 2022 (+/- 30 days)
* Annual competency/quiz, due: January 1st 2023 (+/- 30 days), and then annually thereafter
Written Competency Quiz – This must be completed by all testing personnel 1) After initial training and before technical duties are performed; 2) 6 months after initial training (California Law); and 3) annually thereafter.
